A volcanic pipe some 10 km in diameter resulted, richly loaded with minerals and metals such as phosphate, copper, zirconium, vermiculite, iron, mica and gold. The indigenous Nguni tribes, who many centuries ago were the first to identify and exploit these mineral wealth's gave "Phalaborwa" it's name. Today Phalaborwa supports a vast mining industry, including one of the world's largest open-cast mines supplying vital minerals to the country. The mining of phosphates, copper, vermiculite and iron forms the economic base of the town. The ore from which these minerals are extracted, is concentrated in a huge and very rich pipe.
