2000 million years ago a giant meteorite struck the earth near the present day village of Vredefort. The impact created a crater some 90km in diameter and caused a tremendous shift in the earth's crust across a radius of over 150km now known as the Vredefort Dome. Today the Dome Conservancy is one of the province's prime adventure tourism sites. The Dome area in Potchefstroom offers a very unique experience for the visitor. Apart from sight-seeing, this natural phenomenon formed by a meteorite caters for the adventurous with hiking trails, river rafting opportunities, etc.

The golf course, 9 holes of which are played across the Mooi Rivier, was the first grass course in the South African interior and has played host twice to the South African Open.
